Welcome to the Western FSU Website
GP Federations were set up across Northern Ireland in 2014 to help GP Practices work together where this helped them deliver better services to their patients than they could manage individually.
Discover more about the Derry GP Federation
The Derry GP Federation was formed in 2014 and expanded further in 2017.
The Derry GP Federation is a collective group of GP practices working across a set geographical area with a common desire to work together at scale, sharing responsibility for the development and delivery of high-quality patient-focused services. GP Federations also provide the opportunity for a single voice of strength from primary care in given geographical areas across Health and Social Care to actively contribute to the transformation agenda. We aim to provide better care, delivered in a more responsive way for patients registered at practices within the Federation.
The current Chair Dr Jacintha O’Kane took up the position of Chair in January 2024.
Discover more about the South West Federation
The South West Federation was formed in 2015 and comprises 20 Member Practices, with a current patient population of 127,614, covering a large geographical area stretching from Belleek to Plumbridge. Our current Chair is Dr Rachael Wright who has been involved in the work of the Federation for some considerable time.
The General Practice Pharmacist scheme was the first project to be introduced to the area, currently employing approximately 20 whole time equivalent Pharmacists.

The Western FSU is established as a Community Interest Limited by Guarantee in the not for profit sector, with any surplus created to be re-invested for the good of the community it serves locally or wider primary care.

WSFU Caring for over 300,000 patients
There are seventeen of these GP Federations across Northern Ireland two of which are in the West, Derry Federation covers Derry, Limavady and Strabane with twenty-eight practices caring for 205,290 patients and the South West Federation with 20 practices caring for 126,689 patients (list sizes as @ Oct 20).
A Western Federation Support Unit was then established to provide managerial and representative support for these two Federations, to help them ensure their plans fitted into the Northern Ireland NHS Transformation agenda and to maximise efficiency and value for money.
